Help for my runners!
« on: May 26, 2010, 20:48 »
Planted out lovely pot grown runner beans a week ago.  They were growing nicely but now one double row is suffering.  The two true leaves are yellowing and wilting and on pulling one up it looks as though it has been attacked by something underground.

What can it be and any suggestions as to remedies would be much appreciated.

Devastated :(

Any chance of a pic of the damage? Could it be that they`ve not yet had the chance to produce new roots? :D

You're in Hampshire too!
It has been incredibly hot here and the plants are suffering. I lost a load of carrots in pots which I water every night. They just frazzled up.
Your beans could just be too hot!! 8)
Now it's cooler they may perk up.

I don't think it's the weather.  I've got two double rows and it's one particular half of one row, whatever it is seems to have chewed into the bit of growth above the bean.  Playing Poirot, I wonder if because it's so dry something is getting at the moisture within the bean.

I'm afraid I can't put pictures on the computer because I don't have the slightest clue how to do it.

When I say I haven't got a clue I really mean I shouldn't be let loose with a computer.

What is photobucket?  How would you upload from a camera?

See what I mean?  I'm just not technical, but I can make tea.

Not slugs then.....Squirrels? Mice? It's got to be something fairly big to go along the row and nibble.
I lost runners last year because squirrels dug and bit the growing shoots....very tasty!
Now the raised beds are chicken wired round with netting over.....no probs. (except when I want access! ::))

This is happening under the ground not on top.  If it was on top I could probably find out what it was, but this is where no one can see the little devils.  Definitely not slugs they've been dealt with!!

I imagine it may be something like wire worms or beetles, I thought someone may have had the same trouble.

Seems strange that it's a whole half-row? If there was an infestation like that wouldn't you notice if you dug (furtled...that's what they say on here) around a bit?
Maybe one of the Mods can suggest something!

I'm Hants too in case you hadn't noticed.  My daughter had a 'furtle' (I did warn her about furtlin, and furkin?) but all she found was the nipped stem underground.  I have got some Sybol (now withdrawn I believe) so if I bring on some more a bit quick I'll try a little of that.

It sounds like leatherjackets or wireworms but it could be chafer grubs or cutworms. Dig some of the soil out with the bean and drop it on to a board or black plastic sheet to see if you can spot the culprit. It may not be possible as it may have nibbled and gone away. Dry conditions would certainly have made things worse. In a normal season the bean would have grown away from the bites.

No moles, but Salmos' suggestion seems the most likely.  We have seen wire worms, more than we ever have in our garden at home.  Are there any suggestions for getting rid of them?

I'm not averse to chemical control, anything that works.
