There may be a Predator lurking
« on: May 25, 2010, 10:02 »
Hey guys,
During my morning rendezvous with my hens, I noticed that Betty (who i have the longest) was talking to me like mad (the same yesterday too).  She wasnt rosey more like screaming (if a hen could scream). I opened the hatch that it is always visible to me and cleaned the coop out.  Then I went around the other side (not visible) and noticed that the wooden peg holding it closed was down and the door was open about 2 inches.  Unfortunately I didnt check it was closed last night and I did open it yesterday morning.
Does anyone know what signs I should be looking out for? Should I go ahead and put a bolt on that door today.
There were no scratch marks in the clay but there were three or four perfect holes?????????????

Oh my goodness, get a bolt on that door!, Even if your instincts arnt right (and i think they usually are) its another safety measure, and you can never have to many to keep your girls safe. You would be kicking yourself if the worst happens :(

That's what I thought. I'm going to the shop that sells bolts on the way home from work.
Thanks

This has happened to me and my partner last week. We noticed a couple of holes on the side of the coop and we managed to fix it however, the next night, we noticed another hole. It wasn't big enough for fox but it turned out to be a rat trying to get to the chicken feed. If you see any rat droppings, then that's one of the signs. Contact your council right away.
