Canada goose
« on: May 22, 2010, 23:09 »
Just had a call from a friend, She has found a canada goose and rang me for advice  I have no idea about geese. I have been to see it, Its only young. No feathers yet and crying so i think cold. I rang my breeder who said, Cat food, bread crumbs and scrambled egg. Has anyone any idea where she can get goose crumb from, Im sure such a thing must be availble. Any other advice would be good.

as a temporary feed try organic chick crumb (it must be organic as this doesn't have the acs in it). Our feed place sells wild fowl feed so you ring round the local places  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

Organic chick crumb will be fine although you can get specialist goose and duck crumb it is a bit harder to get hold of. Grass chopped up, scrambled eggs or cat food (mine love the dried kibbles and are constantly stealing the cat's food) will all do as a stop gap. What is she going to do long term with it? It would probably be better at a bird sanctuary where there are other geese about.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

How does she know its a Canada gosling? Cant understand how its been left on its own, the parents are so protective of their young.

My Canada goslings seem to live on grass .

Searching photos on the internet, I've looked too and it does look like a Canada gosling. She said she found it down by the canal and waited around for ages, but not too close to see if mother goose came back for it. Knowing Mel (my friend) taking it home wouldnt of been a light hearted choice, For the goslings sake she knows its best left with mum but mum wasnt around  :( I dont know, Foxes or something maybe?

I think she is going to ring the RSPB Kate. I just hope this has a happy outcome and baby is ok
