Anyone remember the summer of '76?

If you do, you won't be worried about this dry spell in the least.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I remember the summer of 76 but my parents had a veg patch in the garden I could water with a hose when my turn to water.  Also it was that year a billion ladybirds turn up, considering the number of greenfly at the moment it would be good if the ladybirds arrived.
Time waits for no man and I can't wait for growth.

yep! top of the plot is what you can see beautiful lines (?) of plants, manicured herbs and all the stuff in beautiful arrangement. Under the ground there is a war going on for water waged by the roots of all the plants.  :)
Watering is to water the roots! not the plant! not the leaves! not the plot!

All I was trying to say was that as most roots do not spread  too far you don't need to water all the soil, just the rows of plants. In other words not the 2/3 ft gap between rows of peas, as these gaps are for walking down and not for the roots to spread that wide.
Sorry if I didn't say it very clearly

So everyone, which idiot thought up global warming - you know, the person who said, and I quote "in the future the UK will have wet summers and warm winters" - didn't I see around a foot of snow in Manchester not too many months ago, and how many inches of rain have we had in the last month or so? ::)

Glad I'm not on holiday this week it doesn't look too good. Hopefully we will get some rain as well, today or tomorrow...PLEASE

One good thing about this dry weather is I haven't seen a single slug on the allotment yet.

Mulching is the way to go - haven't had to water the FE potatoes and the soil is still moist if I shove my hand in.

Deep watering in sunken plantpots next to squashes helps keep the water where it's needed; at the roots not on the topsoil.

we havent had rain for two months.then last night it  started it hasnt stopped since then weve had about 2 inches up to now wonderfull never thought i would say that but things were getting bad farmers were starting to talk about culling cattle early to save on food as we had such a cold spell early on they had to feed the cattle longer than usual instead of putting them out . and so the grass hasnt grown like normal so the rain will please a lot of people but not all but i for one is glad of it.now the crops can grow normally as i dont normally water anything out side apart from transplants but ive had to water quite a lot this year.

Don't forget that the unexpected Icelandic volcano and its ash has really messed up predicted weather patterns. If that hadn't happened, I'm sure you'd have gotten good weather so far.
