Anyone else suffering from a drought ?
« on: May 22, 2010, 22:36 »
Not something that I'd normally ask being from the Yorkshire Dales but in the last 8 weeks we've had about 5mm of rain.

My plot looks like a dust bowl and as I don't have access to mains water I'm just waiting for my onions, shallots and lettuces to bolt to seed.

Anyone else having similar problems.

Cheers.

Yep - same here.

I've had the hose on in the greenhouse most of the day but it will be bone dry again by tomorrow morning.  :(

We're pretty dry over here too. Had to water the veg gardens yesterday just to be sure. Finally having a bit of rain at the moment but nothing that will penetrate beyond the first 1/2 inch.

as I don't have access to mains water

Same problem here, no mains water.  We have just been given 1000 litre tanks to collect rain water, unfortunately we haven't put up the shed yet (it's only 6 x 4 ft max), so we are having to take water to the allotment in containers.  So in reality the plot isn't getting watered much.  Hope we get some decent rain soon, as I don't want to put in the plants I am growing at home, until it is forecasted.

Yup same here on my lotty.  Trouble is the water supply is a long walk so it takes ages to water.  I'm watering the stuff that really needs it.  Haven't watered the potatoes for a while and beginning to worry about them.  It just isn't feasible to water them all properly, it would take me all day!
Oh well I'm sure we'll get rain soon
Lotty holder since Aug 09... I've FINALLY finished clearing it! On with the p.lanting  ....

Your potatoes should be fine without water.  There will be plenty of moisture down where they are.  When the tubers are swelling is when they need water most.

I have watered my first earlies every other day during this dry spell.  They are swift variety so will be making tubers as we speak.  I am going to start harvetsing after half term.  I have also watered my onions and rhubard to stop bolting I hope.
Time waits for no man and I can't wait for growth.

Yes yes everything here dry as dust. Went to the plot very early this morning for a watering session - my butts have run dry  ;) so I had to trek to the troughs back and forth  :( - still at least we do have a water supply. The soil is so dusty and fine that it repels water. I have had to spend ages digging little moats round all my rows to stop the water running off. I've just been scouring the weather websites for signs of rain on the way - not much if any unfortunately  ::)

Strange but it has happened the same in previous years. May-June comes round and it often gets dry, sunny and hot.  ??? ??? ???

Then after a few months, usually around September it rains more frequently and gets cooler.

At both times we complain

That's the way with gardening; nature just doesn't know how to follow the schedules we set out for her  ;)
