Netting for brassicas etc.
« on: May 20, 2010, 13:43 »
In the absence of any old net curtains, I need to buy some protective netting for my Romanesco plants before they get eaten by caterpillars. Any thoughts please?

I will also cover my broad beans.

some people are like slinkys......they're really good for nothing, but they still bring a smile to your face as you push them down the stairs!!

depending on how much you need. I bought 100 m from auction site which will go for atleast 3-4 years for me. lesser lengths can be brought from local garden centre. My advice would be to avoid ones which you can stretch. They are nightmare in rolling back and keeping. a standard 5mm mesh netting would be enough. But havent seen many people (not even one) covering BB as they need bees for pollination i assume

Sorry - brain not in gear. The beans get blackfly, which you can't protect against with netting... Duh.

I'll try Harrod Hort.

Many thanks.

I've bought butterfly netting from www.gardening-naturally.com .  I'm really pleased with it so far as it's quite lightweight and I've been able to make a "frame" for it using bamboo and plastic balls (see the picture).  It' looks really unobtrusive too.  It hardly shows up in this picture.
It looks sturdy so I'm sure it'll last for many years.

If they do get through then I shall get a refund.  It's been sold as butterfly netting so I'm expecting it to do its job  :)

I use this stuff to cover  cabbages and also as shading in the greenhouse.  Its what farmers use to cover wrapped silage bales to stop birds pecking through the plastic.  If you know a farmer who makes silage he might have some thats not  good enough for his job but good enough for yours  :)

"What no weeds?" wrong or do you mean, "What no brassicas?" wrong?

Come on now spill the beans - what's wrong Stompy?  ???

The only weeds I have are hiding under the netting.... they appear to like the security behind bars

Or is it that the hoe can't get under there without me making the effort to lift the nets?  ::)
