mine use the soil from around my tree bases so soil is fine. Whatever you use if it is in a run try to keep it somewhere covered otherwise you will end up with mud
Staffies are softer than you think.

Mine seem to like a mixture of soil and sand - mainly sand.  I put it in a big plastic box for them but they decided to make their own :)

Cat litter tray or a big tray from the garden centre should do.

Mostly they prefer a well stocked and carefully laid out garden which they can turn into a moonscape.

I tried lots of different things but none worked well until I came across a rhino bin you know those big rubbery tubs for the garden, well they do a half height one.  I bought a couple from Merrydale Poultry in Leics on my way home south, along with yet more chickens!  They use them for water but I wanted them for dust baths, they are great I sieve cheap compost and mix it with loads of budgie sand and grit which is about £4 for 20kg and they love it.  Yesterday I had four girlies trying to get into the same one having a whale of a time eyes closed in ecstacy.  The tubs cost £10 each but so handy, just grab them and shove them into the greenhouse if it looks like rain, washable and virtually indestructable.  regards alison

My chickens use the craters they have made under the trampoline
I also have a big bowl type thing in their large cage which I fill with garden soil.

mine decided to use wifes lovingly planted rockery :D alongside her lovely waterfall she built :D. that area of the garden is now strictly out of bounds >:(. They now have their own patch of the garden, and seem to prefer it.  :tongue2:

I gave mine a tyre with kiln dried sand.  They don't use it for dustbathing, but do like to kick sand around and rumage in it.

Mine just use the floor of their pen.  We have a roof over the pen so it's very dry, and with all this sun, lovely and warm . . .  Mmmmm  bliss 8)

Talking of dust baths, I've just found my Amber in a crater, wriggling round, flat on her back with both legs in the air.  Without any doubt, it doesn't get better than than! :nowink:
The look of pure bliss on her face! :D.  Quite tempted to have a go at it myself :D

I used a plastic tray from the garden center and just put some clean topsoil in.  If the dustbath isn't under cover I suggest that the container you use to make one has some sort of drainage holes.  I sat for about 30 minutes last night watching one of my girls wallowing in the dirt with unabashed pleasure. They love it.
