Chicken Poo?
« on: May 18, 2010, 12:57 »
Hi

I have a couple of chickens and I put their poo on the compost as I understand it is too harsh to use direct on my plants ::)

I had a thought at breakfast this morning - can I put their poo straight into water, mix it up like poo tea and poor it onto my veggies or will it still be too strong?

Thanks

Nichola

Probably - it's the ammonia which does the damage I think. Leave it on the compost heap and use comfrey or nettle tea for your plants.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

I get mine from my smallholder friend in carrier shopping plasticy type bags.
I leave it in the bags for about 6 months, after that it's lost most of it's stink and it's fine and crumbly.
Just put it through a riddle and use it to top dress around your plants.

another thing that you can do - when you have fallow beds, you can use the neat poo on there as a mulch.  by the time you put plants in it the worms will have done their job and it will be fine to plant into.
(i'm thinking more in the autumn)
