Growing in raised beds
« on: May 17, 2010, 18:23 »
I was thinking of growing a courgette plant and some peppers in my raised bed but read somewhere that certainly peppers grow better in pots.  Has anybody got any views/experience of this.  Also, would the courgette leaves take over the bed and shade everything else in the vicinity?

Courgettes spread to about 1m square each, so don't plan on planting anything much closer than 4' away from the courgette in any direction.

Peppers I would probably stick to pots, though I'm no expert in them particularly.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I grow peppers in raised beds quite successfully, but they need deep, well prepped soil with a nice helping of rotted manure, BFB meal in the bed. I also found they particularly liked having some mycorrhizal bacteria thrown into their planting holes. This encourages lots of feeder roots and I got huge plants and huge fruit

I grow courgettes under my munty frame in a raised bed.  Sure it gets a bit crowded (and I probably therefore dont get as big a harvest as some), but it does me fine  8)

Plenty feed and regular watering and youcant go wrong.

Not sure about peppers.  I personally put mine in pots - anything that does ok in a pot goes in one to save precious space for the rest.  OUr chillies thrive in relatively small pots.

We haven't really got into the mycorrhizal thing yet Trillium.........do you really think they make much difference to yields, as they are not cheap over here?

It's not cheap here either, but you don't need a great deal per plant, just a good pinch right at the roots. I never used to think this sort of thing was good but I've used it for the last 3 years and have found a big difference in my crops. I always use it with peppers, toms, beans and peas and can tell which plants I forgot to add it. It's totally organic as well so no problems there.

Thanks for all the advice, I think I will keep to pots and as you say, use the space for something else
