Beans beans beans
« on: May 17, 2010, 17:49 »
Hello,

I'm going to have an 8-cane wigwam for beans this year, with 2 plants per cane.

I was thinking of planting 4 different varieties of bean: runners (polestar), french (cobra and goldfield) and borlotti (Lingua di Fuoco).  This is largely due to me being new and overenthusiastic and buying too many seeds!

1) Is it ok to grow different varieties round the one wigwam?  I thought they'd look pretty!
2) Is 2 plants per cane enough for me to get a decent crop of each bean?  I could go up to ten poles, or 3 plants per cane?

Thanks,

Susan

Yes and Yes  :D

Three per cane is a little OTT I feel
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

If you overcrowd the plants you will get less beans rather than more so 2 plants per cane is plenty.
Have you got space for a second wigwam.

Don't really have space for a second one, but I could make this one bigger - 10 or 12 canes I suppose.  I just want enough to feed a family of 4.

Last year I planted 2x8cane wigwams with runner beans 1 per cane (16 plants total)...my family of six all over 16, plus 1boyfriend couldn't keep up with the number of beans produced...we love beans but not for every meal :D
