Whose eggs are these on my cabbage?
« on: June 13, 2007, 09:56 »
I weeded my cabbage bed yesterday and had a little inspection and found these under a leaf. I destroyed them, but any ideas? There were little white flies flying around, and there was one beautiful butterfly too which I shooed off. Also found one green caterpillar which I got rid of. Shall I spray with saline today, or soapy water solution just to be sure nothing's left to destroy my cabbages? I'll be doing a more thorough inspection today.

I cannot help with identification but - something had laid the same eggs on my washing about three or four weeks ago

Can't help with ID either but it is amazing just how closely they resemble the seed you planted to get the cabbage in the first place.  Don't you just love nature.

On your washing? Poor creature's just trying to reproduce, but in the wrong places, lol. Ah well, such is life, huh?

I got the seedlings from a neighbour WG. No idea yet what cabbage seeds look like   , but yeah nature's pretty amazing.

Cabbage white butterfly eggs, rub them off your leaves ASAP, if they hatch you will have no plants left!
Always look ahead, there are no regrets in that direction

Small White Butterfly eggs, worse ones they are the small plain green caterpillers that get right inside your brassicas...at least the large whites stay mostly on the outer leaves.

Large white butterfly eggs are yellow.

Got rid of them before I even asked, Webby. Figured they shouldn't have been there. Thankfully, the cabbages are doing okay (checked on them 2 days ago).

Thanks for the tip, and welcome to the forum!

Oh dear, Zig,

Those tiny little white fliers? They were so very tiny, only visible as white flying creatures. Couldn't work out what they are - still, reckoned they were up to no good, so been spraying with tea/soap/garlic concoction I made. The cabbages seem to be thriving, so fingers crossed they're okay.

Bugs - pah!

Don`t cabbage white butterflies lay yellow eggs slightly tapered in shape? The large whitelays in groups and the small white singly and the green caterpillars are what the latter grow into if you don`t get the eggs first!
