Minibel
« on: May 16, 2010, 19:54 »
Got some tomato minibel coming along nicely. I'm going to put them into hanging baskets and hang them in the greenhouse. How many would you put into a hanging basket, 2 or 3? Any help appreciated as always.

With that size I would put in just one plant. Same for 12", 14" = 2 plants, 16" = 3 plants. :D

Anybody grown minibel before? Was just looking for one to go in baskets in the greenhouse. I'm doing a little tomato test this year as I love them!

Black cherry - grew last year, amazing!
Ildi - yellow tomato, haven't tried before
Tigerella - also first time
gardeners delight - had some spare seeds from last year, were prolific and tasty.

OK, you beat me!  :tongue2:

Its a test for me! Seeds are expensive aren't they, so 4 is good. You'll have to let us know how it goes, and which ones are best.

Did Alicante last year, didn't rate it as far as taste went. Roma, had a very poor crop, good for sauces but not really fresh eating i don't think. Moneymaker, OK.

The black cherry's are my fave's by a mile, i love them!

Most of the seeds were swaps from here  :D

I'm looking for the specific taste I remember, when I find it I'll go back to growing just 1 or 2 varieties.... Honest !  ::)

It looks like I'm losing all my Minibels one by one they are all curling up and just look very unhealthly although they do have some flowers on so maybe - they took offence at being put out in the cold during the day although the Alicantes dont seem to have been that bothered

Win some lose some :-(

Lardman;
I see you are trying Purple Ukraine. Did these last year and they are huge ugly plants with ferny leaves. The fruit have 2 completely different tastes; pick them young (greenish brown, firm) they have a great texture and a very nice, quite acid, taste. Leave them to go darker purple and they get really sweet but go a bit soft for me (make a great, if odd coloured, tomato sauce).
