Hula hoops for putting net/fleece over
« on: June 13, 2007, 09:26 »
Hi all,

I was looking for netting yesterday - found some. Been using it with bamboo sticks though, which ripped the skin off my bottom yesterday    and I wondered if I could buy hula hoops from the £1 shop to use instead. I've seen people use similar, only I don't know what they're called (the sort used for little protective tunnels) and their price ranges.

Do you think it's worth a try, or would I be better off getting the real thing?
Jac

Trying organic gardening. Hoping to stick to it.

I use the blue pipe that you buy ...

... from diy shops that is used for mains water.  It's bright blue and comes in inch or inch and a half diameter.  It's about 80p a metre, works a treat for small tunnels with fleece and I've even used it to make a fruit cage for raspberries.

ditto me - you can get it from places like Jewsons and other builders merchants - get the blue piping with a 20mm bore, and just use a stumpy bamboo cane to anchor each section into the ground.  Lasts for years so is very good value for money.
Gardening organically on chalky, stony soil.

ps I also use bamboo sticks but with an empty water / fizzy drinks bottle on the top to prevent tears and eye accidents!

Thanks all!

I've seen the blue pipe in other gardens, just thought it was a proper gardening prop and would be dear. I'll visit Wickes - hope they have some. At 80p/metre it's way better than hula hoops, I think, especially if it lasts years. Glad I didn't buy yesterday. Thanks again guys.

That's cheap - I paid £15 for 20m in B&Q.  Working well at keeping butterflies off my brassicas, though!

I also use the blue pipes, ask builders/plumbers as they often let you have the odd bits that they have left or look in skips.
Try my best to be Organic but don't always make it

I'll be keeping an eye out on skips, sweetpea. Thanks.

So, pallets for a composter, and piping for protection.

Hi Karen. How long have you had your hoops for? Hoops certainly look pretty and neat and personalised, pipes look neat, but everyone uses the same - blue or white. I'd choose hoops as I like pretty things    - but I need them to last years for me. Where did you buy yours from? How much? My local £1 shop actually sells 2 for a pound but I doubt they'll last. Oh decisions!
