No.

Potatoes are not frost hardy, even planting at the usual time this year has lead to a lot of heart ache for a lot of people with the late frosts.

You chit spuds with the intention of getting them into early growth, but this is not necessary. The usual planting time - around here anyway is late March onwards. Anything before this is asking for trouble.

You can try to grow new spuds for Christmas, these are planted around July time, but the plant must be protected against frost. Many grow in containers in a green house, but the results are rather variable.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I usually put mine in around Easter. This year the frost has damaged all of the green tops, but they all seem to be sprouting through again, we shall have to see...... :)

I'd like to try some of these this year DD but my greenhouse is very hot, do you think potatoes can take that sort of heat

Start them outside in containers, them move them inside when the weather cools down.

I did think that but thought the pots would be too heavy to move

Depends on what size pot you use.

In the past I've started spuds early in the greenhouse in 12" pots which were easily moved outside when it got warmer.

How long will i be able to leave my main crop in the ground? I also want spuds for Christmas. If I dig them up when they are ready will they keep till Christmas?
The force is strong in this one!

Main crop will keep well into next year. I'm still using some of my last year's.

They are better lifted rather than left in the ground as a treat for the slugs.
