killer on my site
« on: May 15, 2010, 21:19 »
My neibour has poisined my leeks >:( (maybe?)
I planted 150 leeks a couple of weeks ago in a space bordering a neigbours plot, another 75 on another part of the lotty and another 75 on my second plot. all looking good apart from the 150 which are looking very yellow and going crispy.
My neighbour has been using alot of weedkiller just recently and I'd presume that the spray has also caught my plants.
If I were to say I was miffed it would be an understatement >:( >:( >:(
I'm banned for being obnoxious (not pompous as you might have thought)

I've got many leek lovers in my family Aunty, and last year 75 was not enough, most were taken as babies by August.
I've got another 150 in trays as a back up though, maybe I knew there would be a dissaster this year :)

Oh that explains it.

Perhaps you should mention to your neighbour that spray drift has killed your plants and you will have to replant them.  Perhaps he didn't realise it was drifting.

300 leeks seems to be quite a reasonable amount. I'll be doing similar.

Maybe he didn't realise he was doing it ::)
It's still naughty though, unfortunately some people are a bit glib with the use of strong weed killers.
There lies a lesson I suppose to anyone thinking of using them ( consider neighbours crops)

So sorry to hear of your trouble mr Isaccs. I have also had damage from weedkiller drift. I hate it when my neighbour gets his spray out as I don't like to think of what spray has gone on my crops, especially just before I want to pick them. I wish people would be more thoughtful of what they are doing to others.

you can never grow enough leeks in my opinions and all stages of their growing life are invaluable in the kitchen:

once germinated - when they get grassy and a few inches tall - they are an outstanding addition to any salad. I always sow very liberally and use the thinnings that way.

baby leeks are phenomenal sauteed in butter with just pepper ground over.

And when larger they are great, too.

But what an annoying neighbour. I'd have strong words - assuming, of course, it was definitely his weedkiller.

Obviously some people have never heard the saying: never spray when the wind is up.

To date I have never seen anyone using weed killer sprays around my end of our allotments... I am pretty pleased by that!  :)

As for leeks.... they are a wonderful crop... especially after the frost has sweetened them  ;)
