2 new Girls won't go in coop
« on: May 15, 2010, 19:49 »
When it comes to bed time my 4 original girls go up the wooden hill to bed no problem but 2 of the 3 new girls have to be put in every night. They tend to perch on the perches in the run instead of going to bed.
They are safe in the run as we lock them in everynight but I think its too cold to leave them out or am I being to silly with them should I just leave them out?

Can anyone offer me some advise please.

Every time I buy new chickens, they don't realise that they are supposed to go in the hen house at night. They huddled up in the corner of the run or sit on the perches, just like yours do.
I pick them up and put them in the hen house even though we lock the cage.
How long have you had them for?
Mine started to go into the hen house themselves after their first few nights.
All lives are precious.

Well, if it's not a problem for you to keep putting them in then you may as well. If they persist in staying outside, as long as they are safe (and I know you said they are) I guess it'll be okay to let them be, although I would have thought it would be a little cold for them  :)

I would carry on putting them into the coup at night and they will soon get the idea.

When I got my girls I was advised to put them in their coop and leave them there until the next morning.  This way they know where bed is. They have always put themselves to bed at dusk since then.
I was put on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things; right now I am so far behind I will never die.

I know it's difficult not to fret, however I'm sure they'll find their own way in time. Some of my Uncles free range hens have always roosted in trees and in cold weather are covered in frost !!
