Grow your own Christmas dinner!
« on: May 14, 2010, 21:31 »
I saw a post recently where somebody stated they were trying to grow their Christmas dinner and I thought what a wonderful idea. How many of you would be able to produce a proper Christmas dinner from your own produce? This is now my goal for the year!. Havent run it by the missus yet but I am going to get a couple of young chicks to raise for the meat side of the dish  :)
The force is strong in this one!

Last year I managed to get leeks and parsnips. This year I'll have carrots in tubs in the greenhouse as well and I'm experimenting with new potatoes from a July planting in containers. And before anybody asks I DO NOT GROW SPROUTS.

this year I am trying for sprouts, carrots, spuds and parsnips. Never grown parsnips or sprouts before so we'll see how it goes

I'm hoping to have mashed and roasted potatoes, sprouts - love em, (carrots, parsnips, shallots, onion) all for roasting, and free range chicken. mmmmmmmmmm. Need to make a sauce/gravy of my own as well. Any suggestions?

Even if you don't like them yourself (I love them) sprouts are essential growing for Haloween. Just dip them in chocolate and give them to the little darlings as treats when they knock on your door  :D

I managed it last year (my first allotment year, so I was chuffed but also surprised at myself for it working - mostly!).

We had red cabbage, parsnips, vivaldi spuds (the yummiest when roasting by a mile), carrots (sown in Aug), sprouts and caramelised roasted thyme shallots. Sadly not all sprouts grew as well as I had hoped but some did at least so I had more than enough for Christmas dinner and several other roasts around the winter. Ditto with the other veg.

And the evening buffet had allotment produce with the meats/cheeses other people had brought: pickled smoked beetroot, pickled shallots and various chutneys I'd made, coleslaw made with onions, celeriac, fennel, carrots... crumbs, I am getting hungry now.

If we decide to have goose for crimbo then, like Bob the Builder - YES WE CAN! Home-reared goose, own pots, carrots, snips, sprouts, peas, redcurrant jelly, own recipe stuffing with our own herbs, home-made beef dripping for roasting, proper gravy from the juices, and my OH is a trained chef!!!!! :tongue2: I fancy the caramelised roasted thyme shallots though - must try them next year. OH - when's my dinner ready...???  ::)
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Going to give this a go too this year.

Ducklings already hatched, kale, potatoes, squash, all ready to go. Will even have red currant jelly if the ducklings don't eat them all now!

Wondering if last year's elderberry wine will be drinkable by then but I doubt it.

Only definate deviation from home grown will be the Christmas pudding. Might not be home grown but it is a 4th generation recipe and it wouldn't be Christmas without it!
