Squash support
« on: May 14, 2010, 17:04 »
Listening to radio4 gardeners question time today, they mentioned that u can grow trailing squashes upwards on some sort of support.

Does anyone do this and if so what type of support/frame do u use? and what do u also use to support the fruit?

Im always intrested new ways of doing things and having not put my squashes out yet this method caught  my attention.

Cheers MW.
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

you can grow them up your bean rig.  I'm growing Festival and another one (can't recall which at this moment) both of which are described as trailers so I'm going to try and get them to go up the bean poles.

I have a really stout bean rig. It would be no good training them up canes I don't suppose  :)

I don't mind letting them trail where they will though. I've let them grow through the spuds and both were fine  :)

I saw this done on a TV program once they had a long tunnel of squash. I think it was the RHS. You could walk though the tunnel and pick the squash.

Monty Don had them growing over an arbour at Berryfields, but they weren't the ginormous ones   :D

I guess you grow them like melons - rig little slings for fruits that get too heavy (old tights work well).

I only sowed mine a few days ago to ensure they were the right size by the beginning of the second week in June
