Don't chuck the old ones out Madcat; I've got a feeling mine looked a bit like Yabba's only about 2 weeks ago, so maybe yours aren't so bad after all. I'm a leek newbie, but am already getting the impression that they don't do "rock and roll", at least as seedlings!

How come DD hasn't come along to put our efforts in perspective? (Too kind-hearted?)  ;)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

I think everyone has sussed out that everything is behind this year. They'll get a move on when the weather warms up.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Is there a problem with sowing them straight in the ground at this time? ???

You know as nature does.

When is it ok to plant them out?
The less time you have, the more becomes available.

Dunno, but my early ones look quite sad for themselves so i sowed some in my polytunnel today. My parsnips that ive planted in May have poked through so i dont see why leeks shouldnt grow as well. Sow em and see

When is it ok to plant them out?

The advice usually quoted is to plant out when they've reached the thickness of a pencil.

Just had a look in my pencil drawer (Nope; they don't make pencils that thin!)

As a leek newbie I'll listen to any advice I'm given, but I do know they need a long growing season and will no doubt do better in the soil than in their box when it's warmer, so I guess I'll plant them out in the next few weeks.

since mine are nothing like as good as Jay's but better than Yabba's

Knew I could cheer you up ;)

I've got a feeling mine looked a bit like Yabba's only about 2 weeks ago

You should have seen them two weeks ago, no way they'd have broken through that foil package ;)

I think everyone has sussed out that everything is behind this year. They'll get a move on when the weather warms up.

I hear that ;)

When is it ok to plant them out?

I normally pick the time when the bed they're going in is empty ;)

This thread includes a picture of my leek seedlings 5 days ago and they are not much bigger now.

Should I continue trying and fatten them up first or would they do better planted out now given that the weather is warmer?
