Hopping chicken
« on: May 13, 2010, 15:00 »
Hi there,
I'm having a newbie panic here,
Sam one of our silkies took to her bed for 24 hours, after reading various posts here, we decided that she was broody and decided that the best course of action was to turf her out of the coop.
Now here's the problem, she initially decided just to sit where we put her but when we approached her she got up and hopped off on one leg, this is the dilemma, has she hurt herself(hence the roosting) or has she simply got a "dead-leg" from sitting on it for too long.
She keeps stretching  the leg but doesn't seem to want to put any weight on it
Any ideas/advice ?
Thanks

(it's now the next morning by the way)We locked the girls out of the coop, just in case it was the broody thing, but she's now occasionally putting weight on the leg, but also standing on one leg, limping, walking o.k,-all in all doesn't seem too happy about using the leg, but eating ok, having the occasional scratch, drinking o.k -help I'm confused

Havt you looked underneath her?  Sometimes a silkies feathers can get matted un the underside, and it could have tangled around one of her legs.

Just a wee update on Sam the hopping chicken-We were afraid that it might have been Mareks(local advice) but it's a couple of weeks now and she's no longer hopping, but both the girls were extremely broody. so thanks to a local chicken keeper the girls are now sitting on 8 mixed fertilized eggs, so fingers crossed we may hear the scratching of tiny claws in a couple of weeks.  Thanks to all that responded to my original post and I'll try not to panic next time something happens !
