I feel like I have failed this year!
« on: May 12, 2010, 22:21 »
I have been doing really bad this year with regards to what seems to be successful this year. I have had trouble with all my tomatoes for some reason I planted them as usual and have been taking them outside for them to harden off but they have wiltered and all of them have died. I have been trying to grow cabbage and cauliflower in seed modules with seed compost and they don't seem to be appearing I sowed them ages ago, should these be started off outside? Also I have done some cucumber this year started them in modules and they have formed the two leaf stage now I have taken them outside and they are wiltering a bit also. Im also ding some peppers too these seem to be ok but should they go outside to harden off or is it too cold?

Im really annoyed at how bad I'm doing this year, for some reason I just don't seem to be doing well

Russ :(

It's a very cold spring this year.  I've not tried to harden off any tender plants yet.

we are all having the same trouble, it's just too flipping cold.
cabbage and cauli can be sown outside as they don't like the warm, but they could still take a very long while to germinate in this weather, so don't panic.........the season is just late and there is nothing we can do.

Sow some simple veg. Radish, Carrots, beetroot if you havent already. Focus on the successes not the failures. I would be cautious in hardening off peppers with these recent frosts. keep them under cover outside if you can or try to harden off a few of them at first and take your chances with a few of them. Its hard to predict at the moment but i'm not rushing to put anything out unless im sure it can handle the frost!

Everything seems to be about a month late this year. I only planted my potatoes yesterday compared with last year when they went in the ground in the last week of March.

Redgoat is right. I thought exactly the same thing today...about a month late. Lots of puny seedlings that seem to be going nowhere. When it does eventually warm up there should be an explosion of growth. So much for successional sowings.

I live in Leeds and dont seem to be having these problems tbh. Toms romped away as have most my veg. Only 1s struggling for me are peppers and aubergines. But these do need the extra warmth.

Yes it protects them from the worst of the cold and means they will be hardened off by the time their planted.

I would not contemplate putting cucumbers out even during the day at the moment. The temperatures here are forecast to rise from Saturday onwards, so I'd wait just a few days.

I assume we're talking ridge cucumbers here.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Cucumbers so dislike drops in temperature.... keep'em warm, avoid cold nights out or in... and slow down - you move too fast... wait until the winter's past  ;)

March is almost over.... I just hope they get a move on and miss April out!
