Hi and New Chicks

Just wanted to say Hello, we have just hatched our own chicks from an incubator for the first time,

I have had a quick look through and hope this is not a repost, but was wondering if mites are normally a problem for chicks, the brooder has been made by us and disinfected prior to use so red mite shouldnt be a problem, but the chicks do seem to scratch themselves a bit.
Not sure if we are being over worried new parents but should we treat for mites anyway, (and if so how) or is this normal chick behaviour.

how old are the chicks, their proper feathers coming through could be making them itch. Pick them up and have a good inspection, if they have mites or lice you should be able to see them.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Thanks joyful, the chicks are only 4 days old and they are starting to get there wing feathers. I havent picked them up yet, apart from when I moved them to the brooder. I will have a good look when I pick them up.

Should you use a preventative treatment for mites on chicks or is it not reccommended?

I doubt it would be lice/mites at such a young age, they havent been anywhere to pick them up :)

Do people normally use a routine prenvative treatment for lice or not?

i dont on chix, as they are in my d.room so no chance of getting them. I use diatomaceous earth everywhere outside

I have heard we can feed mashed egg yolk for a boost/treat do you know when they will be old enough for this?
