Was I too early with my Dwarf French Beans...?
« on: May 11, 2010, 22:38 »
Hiya

I started off my dwarf french beans in the greenhouse and 90% germinated, but they were very overcrowded so I planted them out today. I figured they had as much chance in the soil that overcrowded as they were...

They had big long roots and only a little snakelike, so I popped them in the well raked soil and covered them about an inch.

Do they have much chance of survival? We're in the North West...

I've bought some more, just in case...

Thanks  :)

Herbie

I would cover them with a cloche as well and cross my fingers  :)

We're down south and some of my my runners and dwarf beans have been out for 3/4 weeks. Not doing an awful lot, mind you, but surviving. they're pretty tough if they've been hardened off for a couple of weeks.
We desperately need a bit of heat........

Don't worry, it's only a packet of seeds.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

The new people on the plot almost next to me put their Runner Beans out on Sunday.  I think they have all been attacked by the frost.  First thing they planted as well. :(

I felt sorry for them so have planted some more seeds today so when I next see them I'll let them know I have a few spares left over should they want them.  I'm sure between a few of us we'll have plenty of spare plants.

If they've been frosted, then a packet of seeds is all that is needed.  They do germinate very quickly and in fact I successional sow beans.

My Duchy organics french dwarf beans didn't germinate very well this year, only about 6 from 20 came up - more planting today I think.

Only a few of my dwarf beans germinated and my runners have only just started to show any sign of life. I am going to re-sow courgettes, beans etc. at the weekend in the hope that it will be a bit warmer form then on.

I live in the North West and i planted out my Dwarf Broad Beans, French Beans and runner beans that are not dwarf, three weeks ago and they are looking abit rough around the edges but are growing well. They are not covered.

You could make little mini-cloches out of plastic bottles to protect them. Just cut off the bottom and put one on top of each plant. It also helps against slugs until they are established.
