The chicks our neighbour gave us are now laying.  Last night he told us they were Americano hens. They are brown with black ´sticking up´tail feathers.

I've not heard of them either.

A picture would be a good idea.  There is a sticky in the Welcome section to help you if you're not sure how to post one.

Right another little job I forgot to do!  Oliveview sent me a pic of her hen and chicks, and I've just remembered to scan it in.  Here it is!

If you go to www.feathersite.com she has pict. of both the ameraucanas as well as the true araucana.  The amer. is described as having a tail. beard and muffs. araucana as no tail with ear tufts.  UK standard calls for a small crest.  This site has pict of all three.  Hope this helps.

My araucanas have tails, but I am sure they come in both varieties - the other being 'rumpless'.

The stature of the bird in the picture is very 'araucana-esque' though.  Could it have been crossed somewhere along the line?

Well I did mention the dif. btw the US standard and the UK. The omlet site shows tailed, muffed birds. Just dif. standards.  If you go to www.araucanaclubofamerica you will see the US type.  I go through the same thing with my Langshans.  "croad", "modern", and american don't hardly look like the same bird.

One of the hens has a bad hair day, her feathers on the top of her head stick up like she has had a bad hairdryer job done.
