Shrub Selection help
« on: May 11, 2010, 15:09 »
I need your assistance in finding a shrub please.
It needs to be evergreen, preferably with flowers.
Only growing about a metre across, by about 1.5 metres high.
Preferably not a Hebe as that is the plant next door to the space, and preferably not a thug - I have just removed a lonicera nitida that was trying to take over the garden :tongue2:

Thanks

Elaine

You can keep a ceanothus any size you want, just make sure you get a small variety! The flowers are stunning at the beginning of Summer.

Mock orange? We have two, one normal and one variegated. Both are pruned yearly and are about the size you quote. They are currently covered in white flowers.

Thank you for your replies.
Both would be excellent.
Tosca you have just reminded me that we used to have a ceanothus. It had to be removed to make way for a new shed.
I can feel another visit to the garden centre coming on

Thanks

Elaine

I'd go with the choisya too  :) Or euonymus.

I have to agree with granjan as far as euonymus is concerned; I'm not usually a fan of plants which "don't do much" but some of the variegated types, although they barely flower at all are hardy, evergreen, long-suffering, well-behaved, and lighten up their little patch of garden all the year round.   :)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Japanese Azalea or Christmas Box ( Sarcococca ) which has white, highly scented flowers in January/February. :D

OH suggests Viburnum Davidii - he is currently designing our garden so has been going down the route of selecting new shrubs for spare spaces. Mock orange will grow a bit big and isn't always evergreen.
