Hi All

You will be pleased to know we have done really well, we managed to get 10 and a half metres dug over and have planted potatoes, carrots, parsnips, onions, garlic, leeks, spring onions, cauliflowers and sprouts. With other stuff ready to go down. We also have been given some fab tomato plants.

We couldn't have done it without your support. Now our cauliflowers are in we can see some eager beaver wood pigeons eyeing them up and were wondering the following.

1. people seem to be using  pipe to make netted tunnels, where do you source this type of thing from?
2. Also where is a good place to source scaffolding netting?
3. And another sourcing question where is the best place to get hold of brassica collars?

Hoping someone can help.

Hello Mrs kev,
blue water pipe can be got online from places like screwfix.
http://www.screwfix.com/prods/19606/Plumbing/Water-Pipe-and-Fittings/MDPE-Blue-Pipe-25mm-x-50m
The netting, you may be lucky enough to rescue some that is used already, if not it often comes up on ebay (for a price). http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BLUE-2M-X-50M-DEBRIS-NETTING-SCAFFOLD-GARDEN-POND-CROP-/170472113760?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_H_G_Ladders_RL&hash=item27b0ee0660

Cabbage collars will be stocked by most garden centres, or you can make your own from old bits of carpet, it's just a physical barrier to stop the critters from getting through

If you know people in the construction game it helps!

Alkathene pipe from building site;
Scaffold netting from building site;
DPC for collars from building site.

you can even make your collars from cardboard.
Wickes builders merchants also do the blue pipe at a decent price :)

I'd recommend 3M wide debris netting - 2M wide won't cover much width for a tall crop.

2M width will cover a 3' tall crop that is about 6"  :ohmy: wide , or a 2' tall crop that is 30" wide

3M width will cover a 3' tall crop that is about 4' wide

Some pictures on my blog of a 10 year old erecting it :)

Where do you get a supply of 10 year-olds to do the work?

What I can tell you is that it is scandalous what they charge, and the sympathy-card marketing they use of calling it "Pocket money" instead of "usury" :D
