Garlic drench as slug repellent
« on: May 10, 2010, 10:19 »
A while ago I saw on GW someone using this on their hostas, successfully I think. Has anyone tried this on their veg?

If so, does it give the veg a garlicky flavour?  :D :D :D

It even works on hostas - slug magnets that they are!  And no - the veg doesnt taste garlicky ....  but the human making it can get a bit whiffy!  Don't do the hot date straight after brewing up the drench ..

How do we make the amazing garlic drench then? and if it works on slugs I assume it also works on snails which are what my garden seems to be full of

2 Bulbs (not cloves) of garlic crushed
Add to 2 pints water
Boil for 3-4 mins
Strain mixture and make up to 2 pints again
Let mixture cool
Transfer mix to a suitable container
Use 1 tablespoon of garlic mix to 1 gallon of water when needed and sprinkle over leaves in the evening

I've not tried it myself but I'll give it a go this year.
A friend  swears by the plastic lawn edging as sold in Poundland. You wrap it around the plants and the slugs can't climb over because it's quite sharp on the top edge. You can also hold it in place by wrapping bare copper wire(stripped from old electrical cable)around it, this is like the copper tape you can buy at garden centres.  WAR ON SLUGS  ::)

I think I boiled it a bit longer than that (outside I might add) - I dont know if it made it any better.

Just replied to the thinning carrots thread to say I use a garlic suspension to hopfully mask the scent of carrots when I'm weeding or thinning.

My spray is made using a teaspoon of Lea & Perrins Garlic Sauce in a litre of water. Hopefully this deters slugs as well.

There's the equivalent of several bulbs of garlic in a single tube of garlic puree; could be an easy way of making up the drench although I only use it for cooking myself!  ;)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Now why are you buying tubes of garlic puree when you've got an allotment?  :tongue2:

Sometimes it's just so much easier to buy things in a tube! Cleaning garlic presses makes me grumpy and bashing cloves James Martin-style usually has them flying across the kitchen!!   :tongue2: ;)

I have been using a drench made from diluting down a really hot chilli sauce (Daves insanity sauce) - just a few drops in a spray bottle and top up with water. I initially used it to deter mice from digging up my peas but am now planning on using it to stop slugs attacking my french beans when it gets warm enough to finally get them out and planted.

Did these mixes work?
Looking to try either method (garlic or hot sauce).
I searched for info previously posted about copper tape and it led me here, and the sound better, cheaper and quicker ways of getting rid of s***s!

Last year I used a mixture of orange peel, garlic and chilli boiled and simmerd and used it on my brassicas to deter caterpillas and it worked a treat on slugs as well.
I have a similar mix which as mentioned will be used on carrots this year.

I’ve made up a garlic stench.. sprayed all my broccoli, beetroot and tomatoes.  Nothing seems to be touching anything else I planted. So will see how it goes.
