My allotment was disused for quite a few years before I got it and was, indeed, grassland. Curiously the part that I managed to dig and plant on last April didn't have this many Wireworms - actually I can't remember seeing any but that might be just that I was a beginner and my back hurt so much I could have dug up a cow and not noticed it. 

I did manage to put some King Edwards down last year and apart from some slug damage in the last ones I dug up, I didn't have any problems.

So here's for the same luck this year.

Glad to have been of help.

I, too, grew potatoes on what was grassland a couple of years ago, but didn't have any trouble with wireworm. I don't know if it was because I grew them 'no-dig' (in well rotted manure on top of cardboard. I didn't see many when I dug them up, and mixed the remains of the manure and mulch into the soil either.

on the topic of wireworm, if you let your paths grass over I presume that will encourage them to hang about?
