Price of Flubenvet - &^%$*!!!!!!
« on: May 08, 2010, 15:34 »
Thanks for the gape-worm diagnosis yesterday, the ladies are now dosed up and hopefully all will be well. However I couldn't help but rant about the price of Flubenvet - unless I'm missing something it's absolutely outrageous!

I bough mine from Scats, the 60g@1% tub, £21 - that's £35 per gram! OK, online you can get it for £23/gm but I needed it urgently. Then I find you can get a 240g@2.5% pot working out at about £3.50/gm - 10x cheaper!! Then I discovered you can buy exactly the same active ingredient (flubendazole) under a different brand-name, Flubenol, for 90 pence per gram!  >:( >:( >:(

Obviously, I've just learned about this scam the hard way but is this an otherwise well-known rip-off?

Buying it online is cheaper. I paid £14.00 for a 60g tub recently.

Yes, thanks Dizzie, what I meant was that the 7-day treatment has begun. Very thoughtful of you to make sure, no offence taken!  :D

nicky & toad - those prices are in the normal internet range but didi you realise that that equates to about £23 per gram!? If you buy Flubenol you'll pay 90 pence per gram!

 Rgds, N

Flubenol is the formulation for pigs and hence not licenced for chooks.  If you use it you must be careful as it is formulated at 5% flubendazole.  You must therefore make sure you can measure it out correctly and use 5 times less than the 1% formulation for domestic chooks.  It would be quite difficult to do.

As Neil 9797 says if pig owners can get 600 g of 5% flubenol for £31 we chook keepers are paying well over the odds for the active ingredient.
I haven`t looked to see what the carrier powder is , maize flour i expect.

Well i suppose most things are like that, you could bulk buy-go cheaper.....but for less than £30 a year (2 tubs) i can keep my flock of 20 something hens, cockerel and turkey worm free and healthy, bargain i say :D. Most of us arnt biochemist so i would rather pay a small price and know the worming has been done properly  than try and mix it a c**k it up.Everyone knows how maunfactors rip you off, from neuro**n to uncle b*ns rice, it can always be done cheaper, and most of the time i do, but measuring out pig wormer for my hens to save a few quid is beyond me im afraid

Would there be a problem in using limestone flour as a carrier for dilution? Although the dilution is probably weight for weight, the difference in densities must be small which combined with the variability of dosing means that safely reducing the concentration should easy using volumes. Given the 5% mixture, a 5ml cookery spoonful  added to 4 spoonfuls of limestone flour would give 25 ml (volume) of 1%. Weigh out as necessary. Comments anyone?

I don't think I would do that.  You can give the hens too much calcium and cause kidney stones.

I've always used the 2.5% poultry formulation which you can now again purchase:

Sorry to say this neil but 60gram for £21 equates to 35 pence per gram and the 240g at 22.99 works out at less than 10 p per gram. 240g will worm 1000 birds which works out at 2.3 pence per bird or if you have 49 birds so you are not defra registered it would last you 10 years based on worming twice a year.
Just for a laugh 600g at 5% = 1200g of flubenvet which would last 49 birds 100 years.
The reason for the price difference is 600g pig wormer will only dose 40 pigs. 240g flub will dose 1000 birds. 77.5 pence per pig, 2.3 pence per bird.
hope this makes sence

I think Neils prices are for the active ingredient not for the filler.
The 600g at 5% would = 3kg of flubenvet for the price of 2 x60g 1% tubs.
We do not need to have that quantity but also do not wish to pay 25 times the price for the same drug.
