We are rather confused been reading alot of previous threads about nest boxes and have really confused myself, How high up should the boxes be placed and what about perches, all my six girls like to sleep in the nest boxes at minute (are they too low). What is best for bedding material all very confusing.

Mine like straw to nest in and lay their eggs, i have a perch for roosting about 2-3 ft off the floor, but of a night some of mine, roost and others go in the nest boxes. i have to lots of nest boxes, some are only a couple of inches off the ground the other is above that about 18 inches high.

If you do a search on this site you will see just how common a problem chickns sleeping in nest boxes is! Some of mine do, and for me it isnt really a problem because i poop pick as soon as they get up, but as tea pots pointed out in a recent post you do have to be careful as they can get sore if they are sitting in poop.If you want them to roost, go to the coop after dark and lift them on the roost bar, you may have to do this for a few weeks.How high is your roost bar? maybe lowering it till they get the hang of it might work

My chickens always sleep in the nest box on woodshavings.
