Wilkos seed potatoes gone to mush in ground
« on: May 06, 2010, 19:19 »
Hi

I planted all my potatoes (early, seconds main and even some from last year that has started sprouting) the week before good Friday in well prepared and drain soil.

All have shown signs of sprouting except the main crops of maris peer and piper which I bought from Wilkinson’s.

I have just had a dig around a few of them and they are basically just mush! with no signs of sprouting even though they where chitted well.

Any advice?

If they've gone to mush the most likely culprit sounds like frost damage - can't see them recovering, sorry.

It is just possible that they were duds but given that they had chitted fine, it sounds like an environmental reason rather than anything else.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Oooh no! Also bought mine from Wilko and no sign of life yet either. Might have to go and give them an inspection  .Sounds like yours may have have rotted to me? Not too late to plant some more maincrop though I would have thought if they are no good?
The force is strong in this one!

Do people think I should give them a bit longer, or risk running out of time to re plant a second lot of main crop?

If they are mush then no point in leaving them longer.
Chuck some more in the ground and i would try to find another bit of ground just incase.

one of our local garden centres had all their seed potatoes half price too today.  But I agree about it probably being environmental rather than the fact that they are from Wilko's, I've often bought from Wilko's and they've been fine.

If it were me, and I was unable to come up with a cause, I think I would drop into Wilko and let them know. Perhaps others have had the same experience this year.

On the other hand - check to see how others around you did with their spuds if they were planted at a similar time and in similar conditions.

Potaotes tend to go like that if they are too cold - the starch tastes sweet (very unpleasant) when this happens.

I would give up on them and plant again - maybe in a different place though if you can

Howard 350!!  Lucky thing.... I have a 200 and it is a wonderful old machine. The 350 is heavier and has a reverse - very useful  ;)

Great for preparing the ground for spuds!  ;)

As I said I have another bed of earlys, seconds and even some of last years eaters saved, and they are all doing great.

But just the Wilkos that have gone to mush.

Will call in and see them, but what can they do?

Oh well, as I said gives me chnace to test out the new 350, and I am also lucky to have another bed allready for my salad crops etc, that has never had spuds in so will plant in there, and then put salads in where wilkos spuds where

question
Runner bean seed directly in ground and plant root/seed attacks
