Not in my opinion anyhow.  You will do more damage trampling the soil and/or haulm.

Most of these ... ahem ... obscure pieces of advice are offered on a one-to-one basis and rarely posted on here by the source to stand the scrutiny of 1700 subscribers.   I'd love to hear them try to back it up.  That's not to say that it wasn't offered in a good spirit though.

The only variety I've grown where I might be tempted to try this would be "Beauty of Hebron" where the flowers actually set fruit (above ground) in significant numbers.

Nearly finished the Ulster Chieftan (note to self - plant again next year), onto Maris Bard soon.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Hello Duncan, I got about 6/7 tatties per plant, lifted 5 plants, about 30 in total from a row... taste great!! Some are quite large for earlies.. Am pleased with the pilots, no manure, no fertiliser, no top dressing, just good Evesham soil!!! :D

I couldn't wait any longer and lifted one of my Home Guards last week - got around a pound of spuds from one plant, but there were loads (about 12) finger nail size tubers if Id been a bit more patient maybe I could have had some more    I have left the rest of the rows to develop a few more weeks

I had a disaster last year with our spuds Charlotte, they looked fine till you tried to cook them and they all burst! Wah!

Any ideas what I did wrong? We didn't bother this year letting the ground lie for a year but OH says I have to get it right next year! (she who must be obeyed!)
