very leggy runner beans
« on: May 05, 2010, 12:06 »
Hi all, I'm after a bit of advice re my runner beans. I germinated them indoors, all were succesful and I put them on the windowsill. They shot up so quickly that before I knew it, within days they were 30cm tall. Now they are about 50 cm tall and only just producing the first true leaves. Do you think they are OK to plant out as they are? I just don't remember mine being so leggy last year!

I never criticise people who deliberately take a gamble on growing early tender crops because when they pull it off the likes of me feel a bit rueful and over-conservative (small "c"!!)

However, particularly in Scotland you are taking two risks; one is that it is surely too early to plant out where you are, and secondly your plants have already been weakened by having been grown indoors too long.

Good luck with them anyway! (I sowed mine indoors yesterday, by the way!)  ;)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

So would I...better to err on the side of caution as those others do seem rather lanky

common problem with windosill plants, they reach for the light, next time simply add some tin foil to the backs of the plant pots ,say upto 20cm this will solve the problem.
