OK, I may have jumped the gun - i kept the faith as Barrowboy said and today there are about half sprouting. Will pot these up this afternoon in peat pots and leave the rest a couple of days to see what happens.

Cheers for all the replies, helpful as usual!

Alan sugar moment - you couldnt do a 100% job on F1 seeds. You are fired!

(I was fired already two failed seeds in last week's episode)  :D
One kid is handful. Two kids.... Example for chaos theory. Hats off to my mum who managed three...

i chitted some sweetcorn this year and some i did not they were both the same variety purchased at the same time and i had better germination rate without chitting the seed i wanted to experiment as it is my first year as a grower.

Mine are taking ages too!

It's the first time I've chitted sweetcorn.  I planted out the chitted kernels into paper pots a couple of weeks ago.  They're outside in the day and in the dining room at night.  Currently only two-thirds or them are up.  But I had a bit of a rootle in a couple of the "blanks" yesterday and they are growing, just not made it out the top of the compost yet...

I'm growing "Stowell's Evergreen" which is not an F1, and the chitting itself got about 98% success rate so I was delighted.  I'll definitely chit my sweetcorn from now on.  Another top tip picked up on these forums  :D

Lotty holder since Aug 09... I've FINALLY finished clearing it! On with the p.lanting  ....

I way behind this year due to illness, but hope to catch up.

I started chitting some sweetcorn "F1 Excalibur" 36 hours ago. They now have 1/2" roots.

On with the potting up!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

After chitting another 30 sweetcorn they all sprouted  :D i then popped them all into a old fish polystyrene fish box (big) to grow on for a few weeks more  :) the fish box`s dont half keep the heat into the compost due to the polystyrene

94 out of 100.

I suspect 5 more may have made it, one very doubtful, (looked a bit black). This number of pots just stood nicely in the seed trays, so I thought I wouldn't bother persisting with the others.

These were last year's seed.

94  I only sowed 12 but they have all germinated with no chitting. Mind you I only have 3 beds at the moment so I wouldn't know what to do with 94
