« on: May 04, 2010, 16:09 »
Hi all

Does anyone know and good place to by young plants to sow or do all good garden centres have them?

I'd imagine most garden centres will have them. Noticed that this year supermarkets are also selling veg seedlings, but the runner beans I saw yesterday (6 for £3) looked half-dead to me  - garden centres are probably better geared up to looking after them.

They can be horrendously pricey though, and in some cases will work out more expensive than buying the veg from a supermarket.

If you know the difference between a good strong healthy plant from a weedy weakling, sunday boot markets might be a good option.

If for some reason you can't start your own from seed, there'll be some that'll be better value than others - eg courgettes & runner beans - the plants that like to keep on giving (and giving and giving and giving).

Have a look for Jane Lane Nurseries, their prices seem OK and they include P&P. Have just had a quick look at some of the veg and they come in 6's for £1.50 or they do 5 lots of 6's for £6.50

Fastmonkey85, where are you based and what seedlings do you need? I have quite a lot of different spares going at the moment, all for free.

Went to B & Q recently and they are selling veg plants, but as mentioned b4 you have to pick your plants

Theres some crazy prices about for instance i bought a tray of nine brussel plants for £1.50 which i thought was reasonable as ive seen them for £3.50.
But the same place was selling trays of rocket for the same price and it was on the verge of bolting, but people were buying it.Now rocket is a very easy plant to grow so i dont really understand that one!
A tray of 12 leeks a £1.50  :(
Best of all was the single sweetcorn plants at £1.50

The selection at my local B&Q looked pretty abysmal even to a beginner gardener like me. I think the worst of the lot were the pepper plants - very small looking, with a couple of already ripe red peppers, for more than 7 quid. Correct me if I'm wrong, but a pepper plant put out in the cold and with already two fully mature peppers is not likely to produce any more, is it?

A pepper plant put out in the cold will die (with or without the dangly bits!)

I too have seen partly-grown veg plants for sale, and most seem grossly overpriced compared with, say, bedding plants even though they could hardly be simpler to produce.

Ripping off the inexperienced and those too posh to get their hands dirty I reckon!
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!
