Spuds - A Picture and a Question
« on: June 10, 2007, 18:17 »
Wotcha peeps - you may recall earlier postings about my spuds.

Basically, I was given a few Desirees by my dear ol' Dad and, knowing very little about the things, I chucked 'em in the ground by the wall behind my garden.

I kept an eye on them, earthed them up as best I could a coupla times and, apart from that did * all with then to be honest.

This is what they look like now . . .

My question is . . . now what?

How / when do I know when the spuds will be available?

Do I simply need to dig one up and see what's under there?
Veg? That's chips, innit?

Desiree is a maincrop.

Please try the Search button at the top of this page since I recall seeing earlier postings on this subject.  Fill in the search fields as described but do post again if you can't find the answers you need (or even if you just feel like posting again  :D )

Search for Keywords: maincrop
Search for Author: whisky*

Spuds - A Picture and a Question
Thanks WG - well there's only one flower so far and absolutely no sign of the haulm yellowing (the search function led me understand what a haulm was!) so I guess I leave 'em for now.

Oh well, I have five freshly-harvested radishes to keep me going.

(And a fridge full of organic lovelies delivered by Abel & Cole, of course  :D  )

they're looking fine and dandy to me - the only thing I would suggest if you are struggling to earth them up is to mulch them with layers of grass clippings or compost if and when you can make time.
Gardening organically on chalky, stony soil.

Not so thick that they form a sloppy airless mass though - layer with earth or compost.  Best to dry them a bit or they'll heat up & rot the haulms.
