Are my Cucumber Seedlings Doomed?
« on: May 03, 2010, 23:00 »
I have 2 cucumber seedlings that are a couple of days old that still have the seed shell attached to the seed leaves and stoping then from opening. I have tried to gently remove the shells but they are firmly attached.

Are these seedlings doomed?

Will they sort themselves out or is there anything i can do?

don't worry, they will sort themselves out.  If it damages the leaves it doesn't matter as it's only the seed leaves.  Make sure the compost is damp and not dried out and they will be ok.

Spraying with a fine mist of water a few times will soften the husk and help the seed leaves free themselves.  :)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

It is very tempting to "help" by fiddling about and removing the seed husk... but just let them get on with it.. look the other way for a while and "bob's your aunty" they'll soon have sorted themselves out  ;)

If the gap between the leaves has opened but they are caught at the tips I often put a cocktail stick between the 2 and gently move it away from the stem, the casing usually pops off :)

There's good eye-sight and patience!  ;)

I've been tempted to twiddle with them but unless it looks as if damage might occur if I don't I usually. I just let Mother Nature get on with it - she can cope  ;)
