broad bean & pea damage
« on: May 03, 2010, 19:48 »
There are small semi circular pieces missing from every pea leaf and every broad bean leaf. Is it likely to be flea beetles d'you think?

There are no little jumping insects inthe vicinity and no-one on the nearby plots seems to know what causes it

May I suggest leaf cutter bees. I know they prefer roses but they do cut semi circular sections out of leaves?? If it is that would explain why no one has seen anything crawling on your plants and why there are no bits on the floor underneath. Probably completely wrong but you never know

If they are little v shaped bites, then it's pea and bean weevil, lots of posts about them lately, the plants grow out of them usually...nothing to worry about :)

They are half moon cut outs, too small for leaf cutter bees, about one eigth of an inch maximum.

I thought pea thrips (dredging my memory here  ) fed on the flowers and then the pods and left silvery kind of markings

Hi,

I have the same problem. I think Pea-and-Bean-Weevil sounds right. I just did a picture search with Google and the pictures which came up look exactly the same as the damage I have on my pea-leaves, little U-shaped notches on all leaves.
But my peas seem now to outgrow the problem.

The photo I have is not close enough.

Interesting what you say Puenktchen. Thank you for that.

Glad to hear that they seem to grow out of it too  :D :D :D

Thank goodness  :nowink:

I had the same managed to catch one and identify it as a pea/bean weavil my peas have finally come through look rough round the edges but they are winning the war now - considering they cut them back to the stump I'm pleasantly surprised.

FIngers crossed

The pea and bean weevil straddles the leaf edge and nibbles away to give the characteristic semi circular bite.

Naughty little weevils --- I've decided I don't  like them much  :tongue2:
