earthing up spuds qu

When earthing up, some folk seem to recommend covering the leaves totally and others seem to recommend just drawing the soil up around each plant, with leaves still showing. Which do people tend to do.

There's been a lot of threads on this recently.

Have a look at this one for starters  :)

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I grow mine in containers so easy to just earth up covering the leaves.  In the ground people probably more usually draw the soil up each plant., as I guess it would be difficult to cover the leaves in that instance.

I can never understand why some allotmenteers keep their spuds buried. Surely they need the light to grow! My gardening bible is a bit old I must admit but they knew a thing or two about growing veg in those days (circa 1952) and it quite clearly says to leave the tops exposed when earthing up.
If frost threatens you need to have something handy to cover the tops quickly, fleece, newspaper or whatever you can find. If you do get caught out don't get too excited they will recover.

I am the same as you Sheila.  Mine are in pots and I cover them over when frost is forecast.  Have always got a reasonable crop this way in the past.  Perhaps I would get more if I left the leaves showing?  May try this next year to see if there is a difference!
