I thank you all 4 your advice. I am happier that I know what i am facing ,if it isnt going to affect what I grow then i will live with it and keep pulling it out. might never be a greenfingered expert but i can always brag that i can grow marestail, should be renamed devils tail, it sure goes down far enough.

In the past I have used some stuff called Casuron 4 for which I then lost the supplier. I saw it last week in my local nursery. It is in granular form and I sprayed the weed then covered it with grass clippings so's my cats didn't get it on their paws. That seemed to work - so if Doff is out, try this.

I Strim my Marestail but I dont have much, maybe as I dont dig my plot it dont spread too much.

Looked at at the Wilkinson site - nice Zoom on the product page (Link)so I can read the small print

It seems to have Glyphosate in it ... so I assume they have reformulated it since Ammonium Sulphamate has been banned.  IME Glyphosate, whilst brilliant for most weeds, doesn't do a  lot for Marestails

We used to have this in our previous garden. We bruised the stems then sprayed with glyphosphate (we found roundup the best). We did this constantly every time we saw a little bit sprout up. Although we didn't get rid of it completely, we definitely reduced it and held it at bay, although we did only do this for a year and a half before we moved house. I think the trick is to not let it get too big.
