Lucky me I have had little heads appear from a few crowns any tips on whats best  to do to help these little fellas?

Keep earthing them up and don't cut any for the first two seasons.  Mulch with plenty of organic matter. :)

If it is their first season leave well alone, resist cutting any as the plants need their leaves to gather strength for years to come.

Look after them well -- you will have them a long time  :D :D

Apologies to all that replied to my question about Asparagus. Its the first season that i can pick what i want so as suggested i was a bit impatient.
For this question , if you follow the instructions completely you will get a grate crop.

How long does it normally take for the spears to first appear? I planted crowns about 4 weeks ago and still nothing.

Iplanted roughly about the same time and they have just popped up maybe helped by the lovelly rain and bits of sunshine warming up the ground. ;)

I planted mine in late winter and only one spear come up so far do I need to quickly buy some more do you think !!

They like a decent amount of consistent watering and higher temperatures (e.g. above 12-14 oC), and I think in cold winds they just grind to a halt.  Nice overview on the BBC news this morning...
Now then, I am a very pleasant lad from York.  I have a decent half plot on Holgate allotments.
