sprouts and turnips
« on: May 01, 2010, 21:10 »
hi, i have dug over and manured a new raised bed today its aprox 6x1.5 metres the plan was to put the sprouts and turnips i have ready in the greenhose into this bed, i thought the sprouts could go in and i could plant the turnips in between as these will be harvested way before the sprouts are ready (i believe!) my questions are firstly would this work and secondly how should i space them. i get a bit confused with spacing and have so far been going by the packet but the plot holder next to me has everything alot closer together with no problems. thanks massa.

All leafy brassicas like very from soil, so you would need to make sure there was lots of space to avoid the roots of the sprouts being disturbed when you harvest the turnips.

You also say you have just manured the bed, which might not really suit the sprouts imho, as normally manure for brassicas is added in the autumn.

There might be a few things here to think about  :)

'Cos other wise the roots move and this has two effects

1. sprouts don't grow into tight buttons but are loose and 'blown'. Tall plants roack in the wind too
2. cabbage fly can get in easily to lay eggs on the roots.

Best to tramp the soil down very firm  :nowink: :nowink:

You're not the only one Massa. As a newbie, I'm also learning about better ways to do things, usually just after I've done it the wrong way  ::)

Best to learn now, than in a few months time when you'd have ended up with those loose, blown sprouts!!

yeah, at least i can try to make the bed good before i plant them! i think ill go up and walk all over the bed today to compact it, then plant out in a couple of days when the plants have hardened off fully. How many sprouts do you think i could put into the bed? still not sure on spacings! thanks massa

I trampled my Brassica bed for all I was worth last year (and its clay, so sets like concrete) but the Sprouts were still blown ...

... last Autumn I spread well rotted manure on the surface, and the ground hasn't been touched, its so hard that I had  to use my bulb planter to make holes for the pot-raised plants this spring.

Mind you, as a safeguard I say "Compost-heap" out of the corner of my mouth each time I walk past them so they know who is boss :D
