first early spuds
« on: May 01, 2010, 12:27 »
My first earlies (arron pilot) keep frequently poking through and i keep covering them up. When should leave them to start growing?. People keep saying there is always a late frost but there hasnt been one in ages. (touch wood).  :)
thanks  clarkey.

WELL, IT IS ALL ABOUT THE FROST AT THIS STAGE. oops, sorry, caps lock was on - looks like I was shouting!  :nowink: Just keep an eye on the forecast and if frost is possible - and my spuds have been frosted in May! - then that day cover them - fleece, newspaper, straw, etc, if you have run out of earth to earth them up!
small, Welsh and almost certainly bonkers, but can be tamed with Talisker, if required

Arran Pilot are extremely early, so you'll need to cover with fleece if there is risk of frost. I'm on the limit of being able to earth mine up, and there is a chance of a frost any time during May ...

... my first harvest of Arran Pilot last year was 5th June

On our Allotment site we have a large pile of grass cuttings from the local park. I do earth up but I also cover up the shoots in between earthing with the grass just in case we have a late frost

I've just laid some old bubble wrap over my row of pentland javelins 'cos a frost is forecast for tonight  :(

Even newspapers will save them from damage overnight, but will of course have to be removed in the morning
