We used to have a buzzard sit on one of our trees at the back of the garden. The hens hated it and would cower under the bushes for ages. He was more interested in watching the field behind but the chickens were not taking any risks. Thank goodness he's got better things to do now that spring is here.

I think kestrels are the only UK bird that will hover for any length of time in still air, if there is a good breeze blowing most other birds will hold position with very little flapping. Skylarks only seem to display if conditions are just right.

Sparrows and starling have a good attempt at hovering in the flying ant season. :)
