my chicks are hatched on hemcore as that is what I use in all my coups. I did try also using easybed recently in the nest boxes of the big girls coups but found it kept hold of moisture should it get pooped on overnight. Anybody want a 3/4 bale of easybed?
I find new hens may peck at the hemcore but soon find that it doesn't taste as nice as pellets
Staffies are softer than you think.

i use kitchen roll for the first week with chicks ,then shavings but make sure you use a good quality one some can be horrible and dusty :(then when they go outside i still use shavings and just a little straw for them to snuggle into at night  :)I think this problem definatly came from the breeder my young ones can make an awful mess with their water and food and so if he has them on straw it would get very damp very quickly and if hes not cleaning them out regularly then theres your reason for them being ill :)
