Brassicas monkeys...
« on: April 18, 2010, 15:57 »
Started my brassicas off in modules a while ago and they are certainly ready to go out but I've been dragging my heels. I know they are tough, but the nights have been pretty cold here and I'm worried over the frosts that I know are coming.  ::)

Has anyone else in the NW planted theirs out?

Mine are still only seedlings

Mine are still small too. They were potted on a few weeks ago into 3" pots and are now in my coldframe and I hope to harden them off this week as they don't like being held back.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Brassicas are hardy things, so should be OK, but they won't take kindly to being planted out if they haven't been hardened off (put out during the day, brought in at night, for a week or so)

I also think that plants that are restricted at the root suffer ... so if in any doubt my suggestion would be to pot them on to pot that are 1.5" bigger diameter than the size of their current module cell - and that will buy you two or three weeks before their roots fill that and they have to go out - nothing to stop you planting out earlier than that once they are hardened off (although if the roots haven't filled the pot the rootballs will be a bit inclined to fall to bits as knock them out of the pot to plant!)

I've only just sown mine in paper pots. 12 x cauli, 12 x sprouts, 12 x summer cabbage, 12 x calabrese. They are in the coldframe, and I hope to plant them in about 4 weeks.
