In our first year attempting to grow sunflowers, we have five stems of two different varieties. First and more compact variety given to us as small plants, so I don't know what kind they are. Second, taller variety grew accidentally from the black sunflower seeds in the wild bird feed.  ::) This is the tallest one so far, at 5 feet, picture taken at 08:00 this morning.

Fortunately our slugs seem to be short-sighted and the snails not quite fast enough to make it that high up the wall before I spot them!  :)

My biggest sunflower was just over 6' (photo to follow) and the rest just got on my nerves as they were growing right by my path (grew from bird seed blown off the bird table) so I cut them down and planted them in my mother-in-law's front garden.  She thought they had grown overnight so she staked them out!  Needless to say they died as they were rootless, whereas my mother-in-law is clueless!!!

Cruel, but very funny

I thought I'd joined! Am I far too late now? Ordinary wilkos seeds bought last year
