Cucmbers - problem?
« on: April 16, 2010, 17:10 »
Hi all,

I have 4 cucumber plants and there about 5 inchs high. About a wee ago i out them outside in my small plastic green house and i think the cold nights got to them a bit. Leafs a have started to go dry and brown around the edges.

The main thing is they now have flowers starting to open on them!? Do i pull them off or just leave them??

Thanks for any advice

I assume you started them off in the house? I don`t think you`ve hardened them off before putting them in the greenhouse. Can you bring them back indoors until the temperature warms up a bit at night? Yes, I would take the flowers off. The plants are much too small to support fruit. :D

I agree with unconcerned - in my experience of cucumber growing, once the leaves start browning off they can't be saved (& trust me I've tried on numerous occasions - i don't think they like me as I've never been successful with them :nowink:!!)

They are like ficus...keep them away from drafts cold, heat and anything that seems natural and they thrive!

I don't think I'll bother then! I don't like very fussy plants!

My 10 yr old has just chosen these as his veg for the season....he's already getting bored of veg growing. This will tip it over the edge  :( :(

Thanks for the replys.

I've sown another 6 seeds a few days ago and they are in the kitchen so fingers crossed on those. I'll just leave the other ones in the house and see what happens.

Cucumbers hate cold :( and getting the base of their stems wet :( and they have a whole load of other reasons-to-die the cause of which they haven't told me :( :( I always sow loads more than I need and usually lose most/all the "spares"
