Hi, Our garden is surrounded by fields and today a contractor has been spreading a yellow grit like substance on the fields. It isn't one I have seen before but I assume it is some form of fertiliser. I only ask because it has sprayed onto my veg patch and our grass and I want to know it will not do any harm.
The reward of a thing well done is to have done it....

Scrap what i first said it was probably sulphur or maybe gypsum but it was probably a type of fertilizer
it just increases crop yield
by any chance did it look like this ?

What is he spreading it onto - just grass or onto a crop?
Sometimes you have to accept that somedays you are the pigeon and somedays you are the statue!

Then the chances that it was fertiliser are high and if it was gypsum then its just used to improve crop quality of carrots  ;)

Sorry I meant the bottom green spreader. a large square hopper. It has been spread on both grass and newly ploughed fields. Just curious because it isn't one I have seen before.

It's probably fertilizer then if it was spread on grass and new ploughed fields which have been reseeded. We use similar stuff which is perfectly harmless as the cows graze these fields later in the season.

Sounds like ground limestone to me and will do no harm. Pick some up and see if it dissolves in water. Fertiliser will, lime will not.

I am sure that the farmer or the tractor driver will tell you what it is. He may be on the defensive so be polite. He should not be spreading it on your garden anyway

ask him if it's volcanic ash.

He may indeed be on the defensive, however "overspray" is quite serious. He has a responsibility to ensure that whatever he is spraying does not make it into your garden.

I hoe, I hoe, it's off to weed I go.

Yes, but Mosslane will not find out by going in on the attack.

Ask nicely, find out what it is and request that more care is taken in future.
