Food in the run at night?
« on: April 14, 2010, 07:35 »
Do you leave your feeders in the run at night or remove them? I've seen people lift them up on a rope/chain, what do you think? Again thanks for the advice.

I always leave the food/feeded in the run over night.
The chickens go in the coop at night fast asleep so they don't eat at night coz they are locked away snoozing till I let them out at 7am.

If people raise their feeders up at night I suspect its more down to helping prevent midnight feasts from little scoundrel mice and rats??

I remove mine as I was once told (by a pest controller) that rats can smell food for over half a mile  .

Agree with Joyfull remove re rats. You chooks won't eat once they have gone to bed so won't miss the food. :)

i have been told  to remove all food but thats just common sense really , unless you want to leave a tiny bit out to test to see if you do get vistors during the night i do that once in a while and so far it hasnt been touched since a placed a bait box in the run { hiden away from the girls } .

I wasn't talking about leaving it for the chickens, I just wanted to know if people took it out. I have been removing it but think I will rig up a rop to lift it up as it's a bit of a pain bringing it in every night. What about water do you change the water every day or just when it gets low?

My feeders are removed every evening and placed in metal dustbins (got free off freecycle/freegle) this keeps it safe and away from rats mice etc (remember they can still smell the food when it's hanging up). I clean my water containers thoroughly once a week but in between times I just top up with fresh.

I hang my feeder on a noggin at night so it's 6 foot off the ground. My entire run is wire meshed so it will have to be a rat thinner than posh to get through the holes.

Any ideas on how to prevent the little darlings knocking over the feeder and removing it's lid?  We have food all over the run.   :tongue2:
